Pixar Branding and Packaging for Mattel

Early 2019 it was time for Pixar to get a rebrand. The old branding had been used for years and the blue had become iconic to Pixar, but it needed an update. My department was tasked with the rebrand after initial concepts from the Pixar team, and when my designs were selected I was put on task to flesh out the entire rebrand for both the Mattel line and for Mass Market.

My Role

I reported to the Pixar team on this project from initial blue sky concepts to nearing the final dielines. I took a high attention to detail with color, composition, typography, and even the shape of the dielines themselves. The designs I presented to Pixar were through many iterations, and the final design pleased both the Pixar and Mattel teams.

When my contract finished at Disney, they were still deciding between Purple or the Iconic blue. I'm happy to see they went with the iconic blue after all.

Onward Packaging

I actually got to lay out all the initial Onward Mattel packaging before I left, so the final product actually came out looking very close to my original files. View my original on the left and the final product on the right.

Mattel Line

I laid out the initial Mattel lines as well, and the final packaging came out very close to what I had originally made. I am very pleased to see my colors and ideas brought to life in the final product, including the unique shape.

Pixar Color Story

The Pixar team wanted all the details. I picked pantones for each character in their roster and fleshed out color stories for every story they tell. The results are seen in the packaging for Mattel.
